When I’ve sought the services of a professional or made a major investment I have always felt more comfortable if I knew something about the individual I was dealing with other than just the diplomas or certificates hanging on the wall. I believe this holds true with employing the services of an attorney and, with your permission, I’ll tell you a bit about myself.
I grew up in a very loving family (well, most of the time I loved my two sisters). Dad was in the furniture business and Mom took care of the kids. Mom did enjoy her volunteering at the neighborhood thrift shop though. I remember there was always music, the love of books and knowledge and, most importantly, the aroma of good food cooking at home. Three critical ideals were emblazoned in my soul and have been with me throughout my life. You always tell the truth, no one is below you-you can learn something from everyone you meet and it’s alright as a man to express your feelings.
My family moved to Grosse Pointe from Detroit in 1958. My sisters and I attended public schools and I even have photos of me playing the trombone in the high school marching band “Go Blue Devils!” From there it was off to Michigan State in the midst of the student unrest, Vietnam protests and the Kent State shootings. I remember vividly trying to dodge the tear gas while trying walk across campus.
Following university I worked for my Dad in the furniture business but then decided I wanted to be a cop (not a good day when I told my Father this). So off I went beginning my career in Meridian Township and then spending 28 years with Grosse Pointe Park Police. My greatest joy of those 28 years is all of the wonderful people I met and still consider friends. No, it never was a matter of what kind of gun I carried or how many busts I made. There’s a lot more to policing then that. You make an arrest and it might be instant gratification but to make a new friend is gratification for life. During my law enforcement career I went to law school, graduated in 1984 and was admitted to the Bar in 1985.
I retired from law enforcement around 2002 and after a stint in event management (handling sponsorship, media relations and location operations for the Port Huron to Mackinac Yacht Race) I returned to the practice of law and teamed up with Gary Wilson (a marriage made in heaven). Gary was raised with the same ideals as I was and they dictate every inch of our association. We will always tell the truth, will always work zealously to the 9th degree for our clients and we’re never afraid to take a novel approach or kick the other side in the shins.
On a final note, my family and interests. I have two daughters who I adore and I’m very proud of both of them. Both in college and holding down a minimum of two full-time jobs each. Where they got that work ethic I’ll never know. I’m very proud to be seen anywhere with them as they are both fine young ladies. I’m also joined by three large dogs, a multitude of fish, a jot of cooking (wasn’t that a book title?), gardening, antique collecting and for sports-curling. Go figure.
